How to write a thesis statement
A thesis statement is a one-sentence answer to your essay question that someone could disagree with. Here is how to write one in four steps, with examples for every kind of essay.
Step 1: Turn the prompt into a question
If your assignment says "Discuss the impact of social media on politics", rewrite it as a question you can answer: Has social media made politics more polarised? Your thesis is your answer.
Step 2: Take a position
Answer the question with a claim. Research first if you need to, but commit. A thesis that sits on the fence ("there are pros and cons") gives you nothing to prove.
Step 3: Add your reasons
Ask "why?" of your claim and list two to four answers. These become your body paragraphs. Put them in the order you will discuss them.
Step 4: Revise for precision
Replace vague words (good, bad, many, things, society) with specific ones. Check that you can find evidence for every reason. Then run it through the "so what?" test: would a reader care about the answer?

- Is it one or two sentences, at the end of the introduction?

What is a thesis statement?
A sentence (sometimes two) that states the main claim of your essay and, ideally, the reasons you will use to support it. Everything in the essay should help prove it.
Can a thesis statement be a question?
No. A question can introduce the topic, but the thesis must answer it with a clear claim.
Should I write my thesis first or last?
Write a working thesis before your outline so you have direction, then revise it after drafting. Essays often change shape as you write, and the final thesis must match what the essay actually argues.
Can a thesis have three points?
Yes, and the three-reason thesis is common in five-paragraph essays. Longer essays can have two or four reasons; what matters is that each one gets its own section.
