Chicago 17 rules at a glance

Chicago notes-bibliography is common in history, art history and some humanities; author-date is used in the sciences and social sciences.

  • Notes-bibliography: cite in footnotes (first a full note, then a shortened note), then list sources in a Bibliography.
  • Bibliography: first author inverted, others in normal order; full stops between elements (Dweck, Carol S. Mindset. Random House, 2006.).
  • Footnotes: author in normal order, commas between elements, publisher and year in brackets for books.
  • Title case headline-style titles; italicise books and journals, quote articles and web pages.
  • Journal articles: volume, issue, year in brackets, then colon and page range: 41 (2016): 61–76.
  • Bibliography alphabetical, single-spaced entries with a blank line between and a hanging indent.

Which Chicago style should I use?

Use notes-bibliography for history and humanities unless told otherwise; use author-date if your instructor or field (sciences) asks for it. The generator gives both.

Is Turabian the same as Chicago?

Turabian is a student version of Chicago with the same citation formats and a few simplifications for papers and theses.

Do I need a bibliography if I use footnotes?

Usually yes, although Chicago allows skipping it when full notes are given for every source. Check your assignment.
