What goes in an annotation

  • Summary: the source's main argument, method and findings in 2–3 sentences.
  • Evaluation: is it reliable? Consider the author's expertise, evidence, date and possible bias.
  • Reflection: how does it help your project, and how does it compare with your other sources?

The annotation comes directly under the full citation, indented. APA and MLA both use this layout; follow your instructor's requirements on length and which of the three parts to include.

Why it needs your notes

An AI model has not read your source, and it will invent details if asked to summarise a title it doesn't know. That's why this tool writes only from the notes you paste. Read the source, jot down the argument, evidence and your reaction, and let the tool shape them into polished prose.

Questions students ask

How long is an annotation?

Usually 100–200 words (one paragraph) per source, unless your instructor says otherwise.

Descriptive vs evaluative annotations?

A descriptive annotation only summarises the source. An evaluative (critical) annotation also judges its quality and usefulness. Most university assignments want evaluative.

Can I use the AI annotation directly?

Check your course policy. Even where allowed, make sure every claim matches the source, since the annotation can only be as accurate as your notes.
