From broad subject to essay-sized topic

"Climate change" is a subject, not a topic. Narrow it by asking who, where, when and which aspect, until the question can be answered in your word count:

  1. Climate change
  2. Climate change and food
  3. How rising temperatures affect crop yields
  4. Should governments subsidise drought-resistant crops for small farmers in sub-Saharan Africa?

Level 4 has a clear debate, a place, and a group affected: ready for a thesis statement.

Questions students ask

What makes a good essay topic?

It is specific enough to cover in your word count, has something to argue or explain, has sources available, and interests you.

Can I change my topic later?

Usually, yes, but check with your teacher if a topic proposal was required.
