About EssayTools
EssayTools is a free set of essay writing tools for students: planning, drafting, polishing, citing and checking, with no account and no sign-up.
What the tools are for
The tools follow the order a writing tutor would take you through: pick an arguable topic, write a thesis, outline, draft paragraphs, polish sentences, cite sources and check length. Every page explains the method as well as offering the tool, so you can do the step yourself next time.
How the AI tools behave
- They draft structure and examples, and leave bracketed gaps such as [add a source] where your own research belongs.
- They are instructed not to invent quotations, statistics or references.
- Requests go through Vercel AI Gateway to a language model; what you type is not saved by EssayTools. See the privacy page.
What runs without AI
The citation generator, word counter, readability checker, transition words list, outline templates and words-to-pages pages work entirely in your browser.
Sources we follow
Citation rules follow the APA Publication Manual (7th ed., 2020), the MLA Handbook (9th ed., 2021), the Chicago Manual of Style (17th ed.) and common Harvard author-date conventions. Writing advice draws on the guidance published by university writing centres such as Purdue OWL.
Using AI honestly
Schools set different rules on AI. Check your syllabus, use the drafts to understand structure, and write the submitted essay in your own words.
